Harry Daniels is Professor of Education and joined the Department in 2013 having held Chairs at the Universities of Bath and Birmingham (UK).
He also holds positions as:

- Research Professor, Centre for Human Activity Theory, Kansai University, Osaka, Japan
- Research Professor in Cultural Historical Psychology, Moscow State University of Psychology and Education
- Visiting Fellow at The Institute for Adult learning, Singapore
He is a former President of the Social Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties Association and a member of the Education panel in the 2001 RAE.

He led research in more than 40 projects financed by the Council for Economic and Social Research (UK), financed by federal and local bodies, the European Union and various foundations.
His current research is devoted to the studies how new schools affect the behavior and perception of students, teachers and parents. This project is aimed at investigating cases when design shapes practice and practice shapes design.
Much of his recent research is based on cultural-historical and activity-based approaches to learning and organizational change, focusing on vocational education, social exclusion processes and cooperative practices in various educational, medical and emergency settings. Along with his colleagues in the division, he also studies the impact of drama on socially vulnerable learners and the results of various kinds of cooperation between professionals working with the same group of students. Recent projects include a study with Ann Edwards, which was funded by the Association of Local Government and the National College for School Leadership. Other recent projects include the study of education, prosperity and the developing economies of Brazil, Russia and South Africa.
